The Victorian Gardener

The British are known for their love of cultivating beautiful gardens – a passion which goes back to the Middle Ages. In those days, gardens were useful and well-ordered, providing fruit, vegetables, and herbs to make medicines.

A Revolution in Gardening

The Victorian era brought about a revolution. With the expansion of the British Empire and increased global trade, exotic plants from around the world became accessible. This sparked a horticultural revolution that transformed British gardens forever.

Victorian gardeners were passionate collectors and experimenters, constantly seeking new varieties and developing innovative cultivation techniques:

  • Plant hunters travelled to China, Japan, and the Himalayas
  • New glasshouse technology allowed tropical plants to flourish
  • The middle classes could finally afford ornamental gardens
  • Botanical gardens and public parks spread across Britain

"Many of the gardening practices and plant varieties we enjoy today have their roots in this golden age of horticulture."

Our Victorian Heritage

At Pinetum Gardens, we honour this tradition by maintaining diverse collections and continuing the Victorian spirit of botanical discovery and conservation.

Our founder spent decades sourcing rare specimens from around the world – much as Victorian plant hunters did. The difference is our plants now arrive by post rather than by sailing ship.
